Why ChatGPT doesn't mention your business, and what helps

Why AI assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini leave some local businesses out of their answers, and the practical steps that make yours easier to recommend.

Ask ChatGPT for a good plumber or bookkeeper in Edmonton and it will name a few businesses. If yours isn’t one of them, it is usually not because the AI has judged you. It is because it can’t find enough clear, consistent information about you to feel sure.

How AI assistants choose who to name

Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews build their answers from what they can read on the web: your website, your Google Business Profile, directory listings, reviews, and articles that mention you. When those sources agree on what you do and where, you are easy to recommend. When they are thin or contradict each other, you are easy to leave out.

Common reasons a business is left out

  • The website doesn’t say plainly what you do. A homepage that says “quality solutions for your needs” gives an AI nothing to quote. “Furnace repair and installation in Edmonton and St. Albert” does.
  • Key facts are hidden in images or PDFs. Prices, service areas and hours should be in plain text on the page.
  • Your details don’t match across the web. A different name, phone number or service area on each listing makes you look like several businesses, or none.
  • There is little written about you elsewhere. Reviews, local directories and mentions on other sites all count.
  • The site is hard to crawl. If Google can’t index a page, AI tools that rely on search results often can’t see it either.

What helps

  1. Give each main service its own page that names the service, the area and who it is for.
  2. Add a FAQ that answers the questions buyers actually ask, in their words.
  3. Add structured data (schema markup) so machines can read your business details reliably.
  4. Set up your Google Business Profile fully and keep it consistent with your site.
  5. Ask happy customers for reviews, regularly.

None of this guarantees a mention. AI answers change from one question to the next. But a business that is clearly described in many places is far more likely to be named than one that isn’t.
