Why your business isn't showing up on Google Maps

The usual reasons an Edmonton or Alberta business is missing from Google Maps and the local map pack, and what to check first to start showing up.

When people search for a service “near me” or in Edmonton, Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any websites. Being in that map pack depends almost entirely on your Google Business Profile, not your website. If you are missing, one of these is usually why.

1. There is no profile, or it isn’t verified

Google only shows businesses with a verified profile. If you never set one up, or started and didn’t finish verification, you won’t appear. Search for your business name on Google Maps to check.

2. The primary category is wrong

Your primary category tells Google which searches you are relevant for. A plumber listed only as “Contractor” will struggle to appear for “plumber Edmonton”. Choose the most specific category that fits, then add a few secondary ones.

3. You are too far from the searcher

Distance matters a great deal. Google tends to show businesses close to where the person is searching from. A service-area business can list the areas it serves, but it still competes most strongly near its own base. This can’t be fully overcome, only balanced with a strong profile.

4. Competitors have more reviews

Review count, rating and how recently reviews arrive all affect the map pack. In competitive searches, the top three often have dozens or hundreds of reviews. A steady routine of asking happy customers is the most reliable fix, and it takes time.

5. Your details don’t match

If your business name, phone number or website differ between your profile, your site and your directory listings, Google is less confident about you. Make them identical everywhere.

6. The profile is thin

Profiles with services, a written description, hours, photos and recent posts give Google more to work with than a bare name and phone number.

Where to start

Check verification and your primary category first; they are quick and make the biggest difference. Then build reviews over the following months. If you work from home, this note on service-area profiles covers hiding your address. For help with the whole setup, see Google Business Profile optimization.
